Students get into the “Spirit of America(n)” history
From November 7-10, two Sayre students, tenth grader Sophia Hyatt and twelfth grader Emma Abadie attended the Founding Forward Spirit of America program in Valley Forge, Pennsylvania. They were joined by Ms. Ameigh, the 7-12 ESL and Gifted teacher, who served as a chaperone.
Founding Forward is a national not-for-profit charity organization whose mission is to teach students and teachers about American history and civic responsibility. Their Spirit of America program is a four-day residential program where students from across the U.S. engage in activities that develop their understanding of the principles of freedom and their leadership skills.
The girls took part in a mock congressional debate, argued a freedom of speech case in front of the “justices” of the U.S. District Courts (which included Ms. Ameigh), visited historical sites such as the Liberty Bell, Independence Hall, and the Valley Forge National Historical Park, and engaged in interactive educational activities. They met “Thomas Jefferson” (played by Steve Edenbo of the American Historical Theater), role played the Battle of Brandywine, and joined the Founding Fathers in signing a copy of the Declaration of Independence. Emma even had her first Philly cheesesteak, which she found “delicious”!
All three enjoyed their time in Valley Forge and Philadelphia. They would like to thank the AMVETS and the AMVETS National Ladies Auxiliary for giving the girls full scholarships covering the cost of the program. Without their support, taking part in the Spirit of America program would not have been possible. They would like to thank the administration of the Sayre Area Schools and the Board of Education for their support also.
