This summer, Sayre alumni Andrea Quattrini showed a valley Girl Scout Troop what goes on behind the scenes of The National Museum of Natural History. Dr. Andrea Quattrini is a Research Zoologist and Curator at the Museum of Natural History. She studies the ecology and evolution of corals and associated communities, and often focuses her questions on those that live in the most poorly studied environment on earth—the deep sea. Andrea strives to work on projects that directly connect with resource managers in order to help effectively conserve vulnerable marine ecosystems in the face of global ocean change. Andrea has sailed on numerous research vessels throughout the North Atlantic Ocean using submersibles and ROVS and is passionate about education and outreach. In 2020, she was a Fulbright Scholar in Colombia. Andrea told the girls that Mrs. Campbell, a long-time biology teacher at Sayre High School, was her inspiration to study biology. If you would like to learn more about her lab, please visit this site. Here she is with the Girl Scouts from Sayre that made the trip to Washington, DC.

Go Joe 28 is coming to Sayre on Wednesday, July 23, 2025. WNEP will be set up at Howard Elmer Park beginning at their 4:00pm newscast and will be doing live cut-ins during their newscasts between 4:00pm – 6:30pm and they are looking for community groups specifically school groups like the sports teams, cheerleaders, and marching band to be in the background during the various cut-ins. Please accept this invitation to join us on Wednesday, July 23 to welcome Go Joe 28 to Sayre. If you aren’t familiar with the Go Joe bike tour, it is a bike tour through portions of 20+ counties in Pennsylvania by Joe Snedeker who is the morning meteorologist on WNEP-16 (ABC affiliate in the Scranton/Wilkes-Barre market). The bike tour has many corporate sponsors but they also get a large sum of donations from the general public especially in the towns where they stop. Individuals, kids, businesses, and service groups drop off donations while the news crew is in the town and 100% of the money raised goes directly to St. Josephs Center in Dunmore, Pennsylvania. St. Joseph’s Center provides care and services for children and adults with intellectual and physical disabilities (see attached). What makes this event even more special is that the William E. Chatlos Foundation matches every dollar raised during the bike tour so if our mustache contest raises $1,000, St. Joseph’s Center would actually receive $2,000.00 The Wednesday segment of the bike tour will begin the day in Sullivan County and continue to Wyalusing, Wysox, before ending in Sayre when Joe Snedeker arrives at Howard Elmer Park at approximately 5:15pm. WNEP will have a news crew in Howard Elmer Park that will do live broadcasts during the stations newscasts between 4:00pm and 6:30pm. Each year the tour has a theme and this year’s theme is “Stashe for Cash.” The Borough has teamed up with Dandy to host a Mustache Contest. The contest is on line where voters can vote for their favorite mustache by donating money. The contestant that receives the most donations will be the People Choice winner and receive $100.00 gift card. Second and third place will receive a $75.00 gift card and $50.00 gift card respectively. Dandy will then pick an overall winner from all contestants regardless of the amount of the donations that they raised and that person will win a $100.00 gift card. We have 9 contestants that range in age from their 70+ to 18 yrs. Old. They represent a cross-section of the Greater Valley community which should result in many donations. I have attached the voting form with the link to the donation page for the Mustache Contest. It might be possible that that one of your members knows one of the contestants and they want to support them or they might just want to make a donation to St. Joseph’s Center. The online voting process is being coordinated for us by the Bradford County Regional Arts Council. At the conclusion of the online voting at 12:00pm on Wednesday, July 23rd, BCRAC will turn over all of the donations to the Borough who will then issue a check to St. Josephs Center. Off line donations for the contestants are also being accepted at the Borough Hall and those donations will be added to the online total. General donations are also being accepted by the Borough until 6:00pm on Wednesday, July 23rd and they will be turned over to WNEP prior to them leaving Sayre at the conclusion of the news broadcast on Wednesday. Anyone interested in making a donation by check can make the check out to St. Josephs Center and write GO JOE 28 in the memo line. Donations are tax deductible.
