Halloween can be scary, but not having the means to communicate is scarier! October is Augmentative Alternative Communication (AAC) awareness month, and the perfect time to shine some light on What is AAC, Who it is for, and Why it’s important! What is AAC? AAC stands for Augmentative and Alternative Communication, and it refers to tools and/or strategies that support or replace speech for people with communication difficulties. AAC can be unaided (like gestures, signs, or facial expressions) or aided (like picture boards or speech-generating devices). They can be low-tech (pictures, drawings, writing) or high-tech (tablets, apps, computers, speech-generating devices). Fun fact: Everyone uses different modes of communication throughout their day, such as gestures or facial expressions to support what they are saying. Who is AAC for? Anyone of any age! AAC can both replace or support verbal speech. There are many reasons why a person may have difficulty using verbal communication.They may have a developmental disability which has affected the development of speech or they may have an acquired disorder that can be permanent or temporary. AAC can look different depending on a person’s needs. Some people might use a combination of AAC tools to communicate with throughout their day. Fun fact: There is research that shows that AAC can help support overall speech development. Why is it important? AAC can restore independence, allow people to advocate for themselves, reduce frustration for users and families, support social connection, and encourage speech development, among many other benefits. Below are pictures of students from Ms. S’s and Mrs. R’s classes practicing trick-or-treating. They were taught the different steps of the trick-or-treating process, introduced to the vocabulary, and then got to role-play trick-or-treating while enjoying real treats at the end. They are also showcasing a variety of different AAC systems they use to help support their ability to meaningfully participate.

Our volleyball team raised over 700 dollars to support women with breast cancer at Guthrie, way to go ladies!
